Must See Places in Croatia

by shortgirlontour

Located in the northwestern part of the Balkan Peninsula, Croatia is a must visit destination in Europe. From natural wonders to historical sites, Croatia has got it all! This post covers all the must see places in Croatia.

Zagreb

The capital of Croatia is a vibrant city. It is divided into Upper and Lower Town and is full of colorful buildings, busy squares and iconic churches. Zagreb also has an awesome outdoor restaurant and bar scene as well. You don’t have to spend too long in Zagreb but don’t overlook it completely!

Plitvice Lakes National Park

Plitvice Lakes National Park is one of the most visited places in Croatia. In fact, this UNESCO world heritage site welcomes over 1 million visitors each year! With over 90 cascading waterfalls and 16 crystal clear lakes, Plitvice is a huge park! See HERE on how to plan your trip to Plitvice.

Krka

If you love nature then consider Krka a must see place in Croatia. Krka has a series of gushing waterfalls that cascade down to emerald green pools of water. It’s smaller than Plitvice and therefore a lot easier to navigate, but is unique enough that you should see both if you have the time. You can visit Krka as a day trip from either Split or Zadar or stay overnight in Šibenik.

Zadar

Zadar old town lies on a tiny little peninsula. You will see lots of Roman and Venetian ruins in Zadar along with some modern features. Don’t miss the church of St. Donatus which was built in the 9th century. Another must see is the Sea Organ, where nature and Croatian creativity comes together.

Split

Split was my favorite town in Croatia and an absolute must see place in Croatia! I loved Split for a number of reasons. First, the old town of Split has so much history and famous Roman ruins , second, Split is a great base to visit other places in Croatia and third, the night life, food and bar scene in Split is second to none!

If you visit Split, don’t forget to do a tour to visit the Blue Caves! It’s a full day trip from Split that also would include a few other nearby islands.

Check out this highly rated tour below that I can personally recommend after having done it!

Hvar

The island of Hvar is a quick ferry ride from Split and a must see place in Croatia. It’s a popular destination with the rich and famous and therefore is relatively expensive. However, it still makes for a great day trip or a short overnight stay.

See HERE on how to spend one day in Hvar.

Dubrovnik

I have the Game of Thrones theme song playing in my head, every time I think of Dubrovnik. Located in the south of Croatia, Dubrovnik is one of Croatia’s must see places. The city is relatively compact and you need about 2 days to explore it. One of the biggest attractions in Dubrovnik are its fortified walls that run along the perimeter of its historic old town.

Rovinj

Rovinj is a Croatian fishing port on the west coast of the Istrian peninsula, close to Italy. It’s a great spot to explore without a set itinerary. You can wander the old town, take in the views of its colorful harbor, enjoy the view from the cathedral and indulge in some tasty seafood.
