There is no end to the things you can see and do in London! From palaces to churches and from museums to food markets, London is packed with history, culture and entertainment. However, if you are looking to venture out of London for a day, then I highly recommend these 5 day trips from London. These are relatively short in distance and can easily be done in a day.
1. Windsor
Distance from London: 25 miles/ 45 minutes by car
How to Get There: You can self-drive, take a bus or a train. See HERE for a detailed post on how to get to Windsor via each of these options.
What to Do in Windsor: Out of all 5 day trips from London, Windsor is definitely the closest and easiest to do. The best things to do in Windsor is to visit Windsor Castle. Founded by William the Conqueror in the 11th century, Windsor Castle has since been the home of 40 monarchs. In addition to the castle, the town of Windsor itself is quaint and is great to roam around in.

4. Cotswolds
Distance from London: 90 miles/ 2 hours by car.
How to Get There: You can self-drive or do an organized tour (see options below)
What to Do in Cotswolds: Visit storybook villages in the quaint English countryside. There are many tiny villages that make up the Cotswolds. Bibury is a must in my opinion.

See below for my other recommendations!
5. Oxford
Distance from London: 70 miles/1 hour by train
How to Get There: You can self-drive, take a train or take the a bus called the Oxford tube (1.5 hours). The train is the fastest option.
What to Do in Oxford: Oxford is another relatively easy day trip from London! The biggest attraction here is the Oxford University. Oxford University is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the world that has existed for nearly 1,000 years. You can visit some of the colleges within the University. Christ Church College in particular is one of the more famous colleges. In addition to the university, the town itself is also worth exploring!
