One Day in Wellington, New Zealand

by shortgirlontour

One day in Wellington gives you just enough time to see why New Zealand’s capital punches well above its size. As the southernmost capital city in the world, Wellington blends urban culture with easy access to nature, all packed into a small, walkable area. From museums and waterfront walks to hilltop viewpoints and lively streets, this itinerary focuses on the city’s main highlights and keeps travel time to a minimum, ideal if you’re short on time but still want a well-rounded introduction.

Is One Day in Wellington Enough Time?

I think one day in Wellington is more than enough time. Wellington is quite compact for a capital city and while it is quite beautiful and worth spending a day, I think any additional time you have is best spent elsewhere. This is especially true if you are doing a road trip around New Zealand. I would focus more on nature in New Zealand rather than cities.

Getting Around Wellington

Getting around Wellington is straightforward thanks to its compact size and good public transport, and most visitors won’t need a car at all.

On foot: The city centre is very walkable, especially around the waterfront, Te Papa, Lambton Quay, and Cuba Street. Many of the main sights are close together, making walking the easiest option for a short stay.

Public transport: Buses and trains are run by Metlink, and buses in particular are useful for reaching suburbs like Miramar (for Wētā Workshop) or Zealandia. You can pay with cash or contactless cards on most services, but having a Snapper card is cheaper if you’re taking multiple rides.

Cable car: The Wellington Cable Car is both transport and an attraction, linking Lambton Quay with Kelburn and the Botanic Garden. It’s a convenient way to head uphill and then walk back down through green spaces.

Rideshares & taxis: Uber and local taxis are widely available and affordable for short trips, especially useful if you’re tight on time or heading somewhere less central.

Driving: Parking is a bit tight around Wellington but if you have a car, I’ll callout where to park.

How to Spend One Day in Wellington

Pies for Breakfast

Start your day with a hearty breakfast of a New Zealand classic – pies! Salut Pies and Jo’s Pies are both popular. I had a pie at a place called Shelly Bay Baker because it was close to my first activity for the day and it was the best pie I had on my entire 2.5 week trip around New Zealand! The pork and apple pie was simply divine. No wonder they are so highly rated!

Parking – available in front of bakery (it’s in a small lane so don’t miss the turn off)

Wētā Workshop

A visit to Wētā Workshop gives a quick insight into why Wellington is often called the creative capital of New Zealand. Best known for its work on The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and other major films, Wētā Workshop showcases the craftsmanship behind movie magic, from props and costumes to special effects. There are different kinds of tours you can take, including a more general tour that is popular to more specialized tours where you get to experience creative workshops. Most run for about 90 minutes. The general tour specially is ideal for any and all movie enthusiasts and is also a really fun activity for kids. I would say this is one of the best things to do during your one day in Wellington.

See HERE for more information.

Parking – There is parking at the workshop or the surrounding roads and is free.

Mount Victoria Lookout

The Mount Victoria Lookout offers one of the best panoramic views in Wellington and is an easy addition to your one day in Wellington itinerary. From the top, you can see the city skyline, Wellington Harbor, the airport runway, and on clear days, even the South Island in the distance. It’s an easy stop whether you drive, take a bus, or walk up from nearby neighborhoods, and the viewpoint is accessible at any time of day. Late afternoon or early evening is ideal for softer light and clearer views, especially if you’re visiting on a windy day when conditions can change quickly.

Parking – There is ample parking at the lookout.

If you are visiting during December you will see plenty of these bright red flowering trees all over (including at the Victoria lookout). They are called the New Zealand Christmas tree and just adds to the beauty of the city.

Cuba Street and Lunch

Cuba street is a colorful pedestrian street in Wellington that is lined with all types of shops, restaurants and bars. It’s a good location to grab some lunch before the next activity.

Parking – at one of the nearby parking decks.

Wellington Cable Car

Riding the Wellington Cable Car is one of the easiest and most enjoyable ways to get a different perspective on the city during your one day in Wellington. The short but scenic ride runs from Lambton Quay up to Kelburn, passing through hillside neighborhoods and offering glimpses of Wellington Harbor along the way. At the top, you’re within easy walking distance of the Botanic Garden and several lookout points. Trains run every few minutes throughout the day, and it’s worth riding uphill rather than down to save your legs.

Botanical Gardens

Wellington’s extensive botanical gardens is 25-hectare! The gardens combine formal flower displays, native bush, and shaded walking paths, with regular viewpoints over the harbor and city.

Top Tip

If you have a car, my recommendation is to park your car at the upper cable station and walk downhill through the botanical station. Once at the bottom, take the cable car back up. I just found it easier to park at the top because there was a car park right next to the cable car station. You can certainly do this the other way around too. Park at the bottom, take the cable car up and then walk down through the botanical gardens.

Te Papa Museum

The Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa is the national museum of New Zealand and is Wellington’s top cultural attraction. Located right on the waterfront, Te Papa is modern and well laid out. Exhibits cover Māori and Pacific culture, New Zealand history, art, and natural sciences, with interactive displays that make it engaging even if you’re short on time. You need about 2 hours to explore and they close at 6 PM

Parking – See below under water front.

Water Front

Walking along the waterfront is another one of the best things you can do with your one day in Wellington. You can do a 2 km walk from Queen’s Wharf to Oriental Bay Beach if you have time. Along the way stop at the Wellington sign and check out some of the sculptures (like the Solace in the Wind (The Naked Man statue)).

Parking – Park at Frank Kitts Car Park. It’s covered and next to the waterfront (close to Queen’s Wharf). You can’t beat the location of this deck! You can park here and basically go to the museum, walk the water front, walk to the cocktail bar AND the restaurant.

Cocktails

After the waterfront, head over to Hawthorn Lounge for some pre-dinner cocktails. If you like a themed cocktail bar, then this speakeasy type1920s bar does some really good drinks. You can order from the extensive menu or can ask them to whip you something from their well stocked bar.

Dinner

I had dinner at Shed 5 Bar & Restaurant. This restaurant faces the Wellington harbor and has really good seafood. But my favorite was the lemon meringue pie cocktail. It was exactly like a lemon meringue pie!

More than One Day in Wellington?

  • Spend time at Zealandia Ecosanctuary – With extra time, opt for a long walk or a guided tour to increase your chances of spotting native birds like tūī, kākā, and tīeke. Evening tours are especially popular.
  • Walk the Southern Coast & Red Rocks – Head to the rugged south coast for dramatic scenery and coastal walks. The Red Rocks area is a great option, especially in winter when seals often haul up along the shore.
  • Take a Ferry to Matiu / Somes Island – This predator-free island in Wellington Harbor is ideal for an easy half-day trip. Expect walking tracks, wildlife, and harbor views back toward the city.
  • Visit the National Library & Parliament – Tour the Beehive and Parliament buildings to learn more about New Zealand’s political history, or combine it with a visit to the National Library next door.
  • Craft Beer & Coffee Crawl – Wellington is known for its craft beer and café culture. Spend an afternoon hopping between local breweries or seek out some of the city’s best espresso spots—locals take their coffee seriously.
  • Day Trip to the Kāpiti Coast – If you want to escape the city, the Kāpiti Coast offers beaches, coastal walks, and laid-back seaside towns, all easily reached by train or car.
  • Day trip to Martinborough for wine! – Best known for Pinot Noir, along with excellent Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Syrah. The village is small and flat, making it ideal for winery hopping. Many vineyards are within walking or cycling distance of each other.
