Nestled at the end of the breathtaking Aurlandsfjord, Flam is one of Norway’s most iconic fjord villages. While many visit for the world-famous Flam Railway before continuing on their journey, this charming destination offers far more than just a scenic train ride. From cruising through UNESCO-listed fjords and hiking to panoramic waterfalls to kayaking beneath towering cliffs and exploring picturesque villages, there are plenty of unforgettable things to do in and around Flam.

I spent two nights in Flam as part of my Norway road trip and quickly discovered that it deserves more than a quick stop. Whether you’re planning a day trip from Bergen or have several days to explore, Flam is an excellent base for experiencing some of the country’s most spectacular scenery.

In this guide, I’ll share the best things to do in and around Flam, along with practical tips, recommended timing, and a few nearby hidden gems to help you make the most of your visit.

1. Take the Norway in a Nutshell Tour from Flam

One of the best things to do in Flam is a self-guided Norway in a Nutshell journey that starts and ends in the village. This full-day circular route combines a cruise through the UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord, a scenic bus ride, the Bergen Railway, and the famous Flam Railway.

The route I took was:

Flam → Gudvangen by fjord cruise → Voss by bus → Myrdal by train → Flam by the Flam Railway

Starting in Flam makes this an excellent day trip if you are staying in the village, since you can experience several of the region’s biggest highlights without changing hotels or carrying your luggage throughout the journey.

Flam to Gudvangen by Fjord Cruise

The day begins with a cruise from Flam through the Aurlandsfjord and into the narrow Nærøyfjord. Surrounded by steep mountains, waterfalls, and tiny fjordside villages, this is one of the most scenic parts of the journey.

The Nærøyfjord is part of the West Norwegian Fjords UNESCO World Heritage Site and is often considered one of Norway’s most beautiful fjords.

Gudvangen to Voss by Bus

After arriving in Gudvangen, you continue by bus to Voss. The route passes through valleys, villages, and dramatic mountain scenery.

Voss to Myrdal by Train

You will have a bit of time to explore Voss. From Voss, take the Bergen Railway to Myrdal. This section of the trip climbs into higher mountain terrain and offers a very different landscape from the fjords below.

Myrdal is a small mountain station where you transfer to the Flam Railway for the final and most famous part of the journey.

Myrdal to Flam on the Flam Railway

The Flam Railway is the perfect finale to the day. The train descends from Myrdal to Flam through steep valleys, tunnels, waterfalls, and mountain scenery.

The journey takes about one hour and includes a short stop at Kjosfossen Waterfall, where you can step onto the platform for photos.

You arrive back in Flam in the evening, making this a convenient loop for anyone using the village as a base.

Tips for Booking the Route

Although the connections are designed to work together, check the full schedule carefully before booking. Boat, bus, and train times can vary by season, and some connections may leave little room for delays.

You can book the complete journey as a package or purchase the individual segments separately. Booking each section independently may sometimes be cheaper, but the packaged option is usually easier if you do not want to coordinate every connection yourself.

Plan for this experience to take most of the day. Bring snacks and water, although there are opportunities to buy food in Gudvangen and Voss depending on the connection times.

2. Ride the Flam Railway

If you don’t have time to experience the full Norway in a Nutshell journey, riding the Flam Railway is one of the absolute best things to do in and around Flam.

Often considered one of the world’s most scenic train journeys, the Flam Railway (Flåmsbana) travels between Flam and Myrdal, climbing nearly 866 meters (2,841 feet) over just 20 kilometers (12.5 miles). Along the way, you’ll pass towering mountains, rushing rivers, waterfalls, deep ravines, and more than 20 hand-carved tunnels.

Since you’ll be starting in Flam, you can book a round-trip ticket to Myrdal and back. The complete journey takes approximately two hours, with around one hour of travel in each direction. When the train reaches Myrdal, you can remain aboard for the return journey to Flam, although the exact procedure may depend on your departure and ticket.

One of the highlights of the journey is the stop at Kjosfossen Waterfall, where the train pauses for a few minutes so you can step outside for photos. During the summer months, a short performance based on Norwegian folklore adds to the experience.

Which Side Should You Sit On?

One of the most common questions is which side of the train offers the best views.

The truth is, both sides are beautiful, and you’ll find incredible scenery throughout the journey. However, if you’re traveling from Flam to Myrdal, I recommend sitting on the right-hand side for many of the best valley views. On the return trip back to Flam, simply switch to the opposite side for a different perspective.

Tips for Riding the Flåm Railway

• Journey time: 1 hour each way
• Book your tickets well in advance during summer, especially from June through August.
• Keep your camera ready throughout the ride—the scenery changes constantly.
• If you’re looking for more adventure, consider riding the train one way and cycling the famous Rallarvegen route back to Flam.

3. Cruise Through the UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord

If you decide not to do the full Norway in a Nutshell route, I still highly recommend booking a fjord cruise from Flam instead. Cruising through the Nærøyfjord is easily one of the best things to do in and around Flam, and it’s an experience you simply shouldn’t miss.

The journey begins inFlam before sailing through the beautiful Aurlandsfjord and into the narrow Nærøyfjord, one of Norway’s two UNESCO World Heritage-listed fjords. Towering mountains rise more than 1,700 meters (5,500 feet) above the water, while countless waterfalls cascade down the cliffs into the emerald-green fjord below.

Depending on the cruise you choose, you’ll either sail one-way to Gudvangen before returning by bus or take a round-trip cruise back to Flam. If you’re short on time, the round-trip option is perfect. If you plan to combine it with other activities, such as the Flam Railway or the Norway in a Nutshell journey, the one-way cruise offers more flexibility.

Whichever option you choose, try to spend some time on the outdoor deck. Even on cooler days, the panoramic views are well worth it, and you’ll have a much better chance of spotting waterfalls, seals, porpoises, or even goats grazing on the steep mountainsides.

4. Visit Stegastein Viewpoint

Perched 650 meters (2,130 feet) above the Aurlandsfjord, Stegastein Viewpoint offers one of the most spectacular panoramic views in Norway. If you’re wondering what to do in Flam beyond the railway and fjord cruise, this should be at the top of your list.

The striking viewing platform extends 30 meters (98 feet) out from the mountainside, creating the feeling that you’re floating above the fjord. From here, you’ll enjoy sweeping views over the Aurlandsfjord, the village of Aurland, and the surrounding mountains.

Stegastein is located about 25 minutes from Flam along the National Tourist Route known as the Snow Road (Aurlandsfjellet). If you’re driving, it’s an easy detour with free parking just a short walk from the viewpoint. During the summer, you can also join a guided bus tour from Flam if you don’t have a rental car.

I visited in late May, and despite the cloudy weather, the scenery was absolutely stunning. On a clear day, the views stretch for miles and easily rank among the best viewpoints in western Norway.

5. Hike to Brekkefossen Waterfall

If you’re looking to stretch your legs, the hike to Brekkefossen Waterfall is one of the most rewarding things to do near Flam. Although the waterfall itself is impressive, the real highlight is the breathtaking viewpoint overlooking Flam, the fjord, and the surrounding mountains.

The trail begins just a short walk from the village and climbs steadily uphill along a gravel road before becoming a forest path. Most of the elevation gain comes during the first half of the hike, but the effort is rewarded with increasingly beautiful views as you climb.

After about 45 minutes, you’ll reach a viewing platform where Brekkefossen crashes down beside you while Flam stretches out far below. It’s one of the best photography spots in the area and a fantastic alternative if you’re looking for a hike without committing to a full-day adventure.

6. Stroll Around Flåm Village

While Flam is best known for its railway and fjord cruises, don’t rush off before exploring the village itself. With colorful waterfront buildings, mountain views in every direction, and a relaxed atmosphere, simply wandering around is one of the most enjoyable things to do in Flam.

Most of the village is compact and easily walkable. Start at the harbor, where you’ll find the cruise dock, marina, and several cafés overlooking the fjord. It’s the perfect place to grab a coffee or ice cream while watching ferries and kayaks come and go.

From there, stroll through the village to admire the traditional Norwegian architecture before making your way to the historic Fretheim Hotel. Built in 1870, the hotel is one of Flåm’s most recognizable landmarks and features beautiful gardens that are worth a quick walk through, even if you’re not staying there.

If you have a little extra time, continue on to Flam Church, a charming dark wooden church dating back to 1670. Surrounded by mountains and farmland, it’s a peaceful spot that feels worlds away from the busy harbor.

Although you won’t need more than an hour or two to explore, wandering around the village is a great way to slow down and appreciate the scenery that makes Flam one of Norway’s most popular fjord destinations.

7. Visit the Flåm Railway Museum

If you’re interested in learning more about one of Norway’s greatest engineering achievements, don’t miss the Flam Railway Museum. Located next to the train station, this free museum is one of the easiest things to do in Flam and makes an excellent stop before or after riding the railway.

Inside, you’ll discover how the Flåm Railway was constructed through incredibly steep terrain using hand-dug tunnels, along with exhibits on the workers, locomotives, and engineering challenges that made the railway possible.

Interactive displays, historic photographs, and restored train equipment help bring the story to life, making it enjoyable even if you’re not a railway enthusiast.

The museum is relatively small, so you can comfortably explore it in 30 to 45 minutes, making it an easy addition to your itinerary. It’s also a great option if the weather isn’t cooperating.

8. Relax at the Fjord Sauna

After a day of hiking, sightseeing, or cruising through the fjords, there’s no better way to unwind than at Flam’s floating fjord sauna. Combining a traditional Nordic sauna with the opportunity to take a refreshing dip in the Aurlandsfjord, it’s one of the most unique things to do in and around Flam.

Inside, large panoramic windows frame incredible views of the surrounding mountains and fjord, creating a peaceful setting whether you’re visiting during the day or at sunset. When the heat becomes too much, simply step outside and plunge into the cold fjord before warming up again in the sauna—a classic Scandinavian experience.

You can choose between shared sessions or book the sauna privately if you’re traveling with family or friends.

Because the sauna is small and incredibly popular during the summer months, I recommend reserving your session well in advance.

9. Kayak on the Aurlandsfjord

If you want to experience the fjord from a completely different perspective, kayaking on the Aurlandsfjord is one of the most unforgettable things to do in and around Flam. Paddling across the calm water allows you to appreciate the towering cliffs and waterfalls in a way that’s impossible from land or on a larger cruise boat.

Whether you’re a first-time paddler or an experienced kayaker, you’ll find guided tours departing directly from Flam. Most tours last between two and three hours and include all the equipment and basic instruction, making them suitable for beginners.

Morning tours generally offer the calmest water and fewer boats, while evening tours provide beautiful lighting as the sun begins to drop behind the mountains.

Even if you’ve already taken a fjord cruise, kayaking offers a completely different experience. The peaceful surroundings and slower pace make it easy to understand why this is one of the area’s most popular outdoor activities.

10. Cycle the Rallarvegen

If you’re looking for a more adventurous way to experience the mountains surrounding Flam, cycling the Rallarvegen should be at the top of your list. Often ranked among the world’s most scenic bike rides, this historic maintenance road follows the Bergen Railway through spectacular alpine scenery before descending to Flam.

The most popular route begins in Myrdal, where you’ll ride mostly downhill to Flam over approximately 20 kilometers (12.5 miles). Along the way, you’ll pass waterfalls, rivers, mountain lakes, and panoramic viewpoints before finishing in the fjord village.

Many people combine this with the Flam Railway by taking the train up to Myrdal with a rented bike and cycling back to Flam. It’s a fantastic way to experience the same landscape from an entirely different perspective.

Keep in mind that the route is only open during the snow-free months, typically from mid-July through September, although opening dates vary depending on snowfall.

11. Fly Across the Valley on the Flam Zipline

If you’re craving a little adrenaline, the Flåm Zipline is a fun addition to your itinerary. Stretching over the dramatic Flam Valley, it’s one of Scandinavia’s longest ziplines and offers incredible views of waterfalls, rivers, and the surrounding mountains as you soar across the landscape.

The zipline is located near Vatnahalsen Station, just below Myrdal, making it easy to combine with the Flåm Railway and the Rallarvegen cycle route. A popular way to experience all three attractions is to rent a bike in Flam, take the Flåm Railway to Myrdal with your bike, and walk about 15 minutes to the Flåm Zipline. While you enjoy the ride down to Kårdal, the zipline operator transports your bike separately. Once you arrive, simply collect your bike and cycle the remaining 17 km (10.5 miles) back to Flam. You can also rent a bike at Kårdal (the bottom of the zipline).

Even if you don’t plan to cycle, you can still incorporate the zipline into your day with a short walk from Vatnahalsen Station.

12. Visit Undredal

Just a 20-minute drive from Flam, the tiny village of Undredal is one of the most charming places to visit nea rFlam. Home to fewer than 100 residents, it’s famous for its traditional goat cheese, picturesque setting, and one of the smallest stave churches in Northern Europe.

Surrounded by towering mountains and the Aurlandsfjord, Undredal feels worlds away from the crowds you’ll find in Flam. Spend an hour or two wandering through the village, stopping at the local cheese shop, or enjoying lunch with a view of the fjord.

Don’t miss Undredal Stave Church, built in 1147. Despite its modest size, it’s one of Norway’s best-preserved stave churches and offers a fascinating glimpse into the country’s medieval history.

If you’re looking for things to do near Flam, Undredal is an easy and worthwhile detour that pairs perfectly with a visit to Stegastein Viewpoint.

13. Drive the Snow Road (Aurlandsfjellet)

If you have a rental car, don’t miss driving the spectacular Aurlandsfjellet Scenic Route, better known as the Snow Road. Connecting Aurland with Lærdal, this National Tourist Route climbs high above the fjords before crossing a dramatic mountain plateau.

The road is only open during the warmer months, but if you visit in late spring or early summer, you’ll often drive between towering walls of snow several meters high. Even later in the season, the alpine scenery is nothing short of spectacular.

The route also includes Stegastein Viewpoint, making it easy to combine two of the best things to do in and around Flam into one scenic drive.

Unlike the Lærdal Tunnel, which passes beneath the mountains, the Snow Road rewards you with panoramic viewpoints, crystal-clear mountain lakes, and countless photo opportunities along the way.

14. Explore Aurland

Located just 10 minutes from Flam, Aurland is a quiet fjord village that’s often overlooked by travelers rushing to the railway or fjord cruises. While smaller than Flam, it’s a lovely place to slow down and enjoy the peaceful side of western Norway.

Take a stroll along the waterfront, browse a few local shops, or stop for coffee and fresh pastries before continuing your journey. If you’re already driving to Stegastein Viewpoint or the Snow Road, Aurland makes an easy stop along the way.

Even if you only spend an hour here, Aurland offers a quieter contrast to the busier atmosphere in Flam.

15. Visit Otternes Bygdetun

Located just 10 minutes from Flam, Otternes Bygdetun is one of the region’s best-kept hidden gems. Perched high above the Aurlandsfjord, this remarkably preserved cluster farm offers a fascinating glimpse into rural Norwegian life while rewarding you with some of the most beautiful views in the area.

The historic farm consists of 27 wooden buildings, many dating back to the 1700s, although archaeological evidence suggests people have lived here since around 300 AD. Unlike many historic farmsteads, Otternes has remained largely unchanged, preserving its original layout, stone walls, footpaths, and traditional buildings

There is a small charge and you can pay in either krones or euros.

Where to Stay in Flam

One of the biggest decisions you’ll make when planning your trip is where to stay. The good news is that Flam is a very small village, so you’ll never be far from the railway station, fjord cruises, restaurants, or hiking trails. If it’s your first visit, I recommend staying right in the village center so you can walk everywhere and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere after the day-trippers leave.

Luxury: Fretheim Hotel

Set in a beautifully restored 19th-century manor house, Fretheim Hotel is Flam’s most iconic hotel. The location couldn’t be better—just a short walk from the train station and harbor—and the property offers elegant rooms, beautiful gardens, and one of the area’s best restaurants. If you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply want the classic Flam experience, this is the place to stay

Mid-Range: Flåmsbrygga Hotel

Located right on the waterfront, Flåmsbrygga Hotel combines modern comfort with traditional Norwegian design. The rooms feature warm timber interiors, and you’ll be just steps from the harbor, fjord cruises, and the famous Ægir BrewPub, making it an excellent base for exploring Flam.

Best Budget Option: Heimly Guesthouse

If you’re looking to save a little money without sacrificing location, Heimly Guesthouse is a fantastic choice. Situated just a five-minute walk from the center of Flam, it offers peaceful fjord views, comfortable rooms, and breakfast and dinner are included in many rates, making it excellent value for Norway

Should You Stay in Flam or Aurland?

If you’re deciding between Flam and Aurland, your choice largely depends on whether you’ll have a rental car.

Flam is the more convenient option if you’re traveling by train or relying on public transportation. The Flåm Railway, fjord cruises, restaurants, cafés, and most of the area’s attractions are all within walking distance, making it easy to explore without needing a car.

If you do have a rental car, however, I highly recommend considering Aurland. Located just 10 minutes from Flam, this picturesque village offers a quieter atmosphere while still providing easy access to all the best things to do in and around Flam. You’ll be close enough to drive into Flåm for the railway or fjord cruise, then return to a more peaceful setting at the end of the day.

Another advantage of staying in Aurland is that you’ll already be on the road to attractions like Stegastein Viewpoint, Otternes Bygdetun, and the Snow Road (Aurlandsfjellet), making it an excellent base if you’re exploring the region by car.

Best Hotels in Aurland

Hotel Aurlandsfjord

Hotel Aurlandsfjord offers modern rooms with beautiful fjord views and an excellent location within walking distance of restaurants and cafés. It’s only about a 10-minute drive to Flam, making it an ideal base if you’re exploring the region by car.

Winjum Apartments

If you prefer a little more space or are traveling with family or friends, Winjum Apartments are an excellent choice. The self-catering apartments overlook the Aurlandsfjord and provide full kitchens, making them ideal for longer stays or anyone wanting the flexibility to prepare meals.

Vangsgaarden Gjestgiveri

For a more traditional Norwegian experience, Vangsgaarden Gjestgiveri offers charming historic cabins and waterfront accommodations dating back to the 1700s. The property has plenty of character and is home to one of Aurland’s most popular restaurants, making it a great choice if you’re looking for a unique stay. This is where I stayed and I really liked it!

Where to Eat in Flam

Although Flam is small, you’ll find several excellent restaurants serving traditional Norwegian dishes, fresh seafood, and locally brewed beer.

Ægir BrewPub

If you only eat at one restaurant in Flam, make it Ægir BrewPub. Inspired by Viking architecture, this award-winning brewpub is famous for its craft beer and Norwegian-inspired menu featuring locally sourced ingredients. Reservations are highly recommended during summer.

Flåm Bakery

Perfect for breakfast or a quick lunch, Flåm Bakery serves freshly baked pastries, sandwiches, cinnamon buns, and excellent coffee. It’s an ideal stop before catching the Flåm Railway or heading out on a hike.

Flåm Marina Restaurant

Located a short walk from the train station, Flåm Marina Restaurant offers beautiful fjord views alongside seafood, burgers, and Norwegian classics. If the weather is nice, grab a table on the outdoor terrace.

Restaurant Arven

For a more refined dining experience, Restaurant Arven at Fretheim Hotel focuses on seasonal Norwegian cuisine made with locally sourced ingredients. It’s an excellent choice if you’re celebrating a special occasion.

Tip – make reservations during the peak season, especially for dinner.

Best Time to Visit Flam

The best time to visit Flam depends on what you want to experience. While the village is beautiful year-round, each season offers something different—from roaring waterfalls in spring to long hiking days in summer and colorful landscapes in early fall.

Spring (May)

If you’re looking for a balance of beautiful scenery and fewer crowds, May is one of the best times to visit Flåm.

As the snow begins to melt in the surrounding mountains, waterfalls are at their most powerful, creating spectacular scenery throughout the fjord. Snow still blankets many of the mountain peaks, providing a dramatic contrast against the lush green valleys below.

Most attractions begin reopening for the summer season, although the Snow Road (Aurlandsfjellet) may not open until late May or early June, depending on snowfall.

I visited in late May and absolutely loved it. The waterfalls were incredibly powerful, the scenery was stunning, and although there were still tourists, it never felt overwhelmingly crowded.

Summer (June–August)

Summer is Flam’s busiest season and for good reason. Long daylight hours, pleasant temperatures, and fully open attractions make it an excellent time to visit.

This is the best season for kayaking, cycling the Rallarvegen, hiking, and enjoying the fjords from the water. It’s also when the Snow Road is reliably open and all restaurants, hotels, and tours are operating.

The downside is that Flam is one of Norway’s most popular cruise destinations, so expect the village to be busy during the middle of the day. Fortunately, mornings and evenings are much quieter once the cruise ships depart.

If you’re visiting during summer, book your accommodations, Flam Railway tickets, and fjord cruises well in advance.

Fall (September)

September is another fantastic time to visit. Temperatures remain comfortable, hiking conditions are excellent, and the surrounding mountains begin to transform with autumn colors.

Crowds are noticeably smaller than in July and August, making it easier to enjoy popular viewpoints and attractions.

Most experiences continue operating through September, although some tours and restaurants begin reducing their schedules toward the end of the month.

My Recommendation

If I were planning another trip, I’d choose late May, early June, or September.

Late May offers dramatic waterfalls and snow-capped mountains, while September brings beautiful hiking weather and fewer crowds. Both seasons provide a great balance of scenery, accessibility, and a more relaxed atmosphere than peak summer.

Getting Around Flåm

One of the best things about Flam is how compact it is. Once you arrive, you can easily explore the village on foot.

If you’re staying in Flam, the train station, harbor, restaurants, hotels, and many attractions are all within a short walk of one another.

By Car

Having a rental car gives you the greatest flexibility, especially if you plan to visit Stegastein Viewpoint, Aurland, Undredal, Otternes Bygdetun, or drive the Snow Road.

Parking is available throughout Flam, although it can fill quickly during the busiest summer months.

By Train

The Flåm Railway is both an attraction and a convenient way to reach Myrdal, where you can connect to the Bergen Railway toward Oslo or Bergen.

By Ferry

Passenger ferries connect Flam with Gudvangen and several villages along the Sognefjord, making it easy to explore the region without a car.

Before your trip, keep these tips in mind to make the most of your time in Flam.

• Dress in layers. Even during summer, temperatures on the fjord or in the mountains can change quickly.
• Spend at least one night in the area if your schedule allows. Once the day-trippers leave, Flam becomes much quieter and more enjoyable.
• Arrive early at popular attractions such as Stegastein Viewpoint for the best lighting and fewer people.
• Most restaurants and hotels accept credit cards, so carrying cash is generally unnecessary.

Can you visit Flam without taking the Flam Railway?

Yes. While the railway is the area’s most famous attraction, there are plenty of other things to do in and around Flam, including cruising the Nærøyfjord, hiking to Brekkefossen, kayaking on the fjord, relaxing in a floating sauna, and exploring nearby villages.

Is Flam walkable?

Yes. The village is compact, and you’ll be able to walk between the train station, harbor, hotels, restaurants, museums, and most local attractions in just a few minutes.

Can you visit Flam as a day trip?

Yes, but staying overnight allows you to experience much more. A day trip is enough to ride the Flåm Railway or take a fjord cruise, but spending at least one night gives you time to visit Stegastein, hike to Brekkefossen, and enjoy the village after the daytime crowds have left.

Is Flam or Geiranger better?

Both destinations are spectacular, but they offer different experiences. Flam is easier to access and offers more activities, including the Flåm Railway, fjord cruises, kayaking, and cycling. Geiranger is best known for its dramatic waterfalls, iconic viewpoints, and scenic hikes. If you have time, I highly recommend visiting both.
