Despite being a small lakeside town, there are several memorable things to do in Lake Tekapo. Most of the main attractions are located close to town and can easily be visited on foot. The lakefront area, Mount John Summit Track, and Tekapo Springs are all within a short distance of the village center.

Below are some of the best things to do in Lake Tekapo.

Visit the Church of the Good Shepherd

The Church of the Good Shepherd is the most famous landmark in Lake Tekapo and one of the most photographed locations in New Zealand. Built in 1935, the small stone church sits directly on the shore of the lake with views of the surrounding Southern Alps. The church was built as a memorial to the early settlers of the Mackenzie Basin. Its simple stone design and scenic setting make it a popular stop for visitors and photographers and is first on this things to do in Lake Tekapo for a good reason.

The church interior can be visited quietly when services are not taking place, but photography inside is not allowed. The surrounding lakefront area offers excellent viewpoints of both the church and Lake Tekapo. Sunrise and sunset are the best times to visit, when the lighting is softer and the lake’s turquoise color is most vivid.

Go Stargazing in the Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve

One of the most unique things to do in Lake Tekapo is stargazing in the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve. This region has some of the clearest night skies in the world due to minimal light pollution and its remote alpine location.

They have several guided experiences to observe the night sky through powerful telescopes. On clear nights, it is possible to see the Milky Way, distant galaxies, planets, and star clusters. Two of the most popular stargazing experiences are offered by the Dark Sky Project (tour below) in the town center and tours at the Mount John Observatory.

Visit the Mount John Observatory

Located at the summit of Mount John, the Mount John Observatory is New Zealand’s leading astronomical research facility. The observatory is operated by the University of Canterbury and plays an important role in international space research.

While the site is primarily used for scientific study, visitors can experience the observatory through guided nighttime tours. These tours allow guests to view celestial objects through professional telescopes while learning about astronomy and the Southern Hemisphere sky.

Access to the observatory area is via Mount John Summit Track or by road during daytime hours.

Hike the Mount John Summit Track

The Mount John Summit Track is the most popular hike in Lake Tekapo and offers some of the best views of the Mackenzie Basin. The trail climbs steadily above the town and provides panoramic views of Lake Tekapo, Lake Alexandrina, and the surrounding mountains.

There is a cafe at the top called Astro Café and it is one of the most scenic cafés in New Zealand. Many hikers stop here for coffee while enjoying views over the lake.

Relax at Tekapo Springs

Tekapo Springs is a popular wellness complex located just outside the Lake Tekapo town center and is considered one of the best things to do in Lake Tekapo. The facility includes several hot pools, a day spa, and seasonal activities such as ice skating and snow tubing during winter. The hot pools are heated to different temperatures and overlook Lake Tekapo, creating a relaxing setting after a day of hiking or sightseeing.

One of the most popular experiences is the stargazing hot pools, where visitors can soak in warm water while viewing the night sky above the Mackenzie Basin.

Walk Along the Lake Tekapo Shoreline

Walking along the shoreline is one of the easiest things to do in Lake Tekapo and a great way to enjoy the lake’s unique turquoise color. The lake gets its bright color from glacial flour, fine rock particles carried into the water by nearby glaciers.

Several walking paths run along the lakefront and connect the town center with the Church of the Good Shepherd and nearby viewpoints. These paths are mostly flat and suitable for all fitness levels.

Sunrise and sunset are particularly scenic times to walk along the shoreline.

See the Lupin Flowers (Seasonal)

During late spring and early summer, the shores of Lake Tekapo become famous for their colorful lupin flowers. These tall purple, pink, and blue flowers bloom across parts of the Mackenzie Basin and are especially photogenic along the lakefront.

The best time to see lupins around Lake Tekapo is typically late November through early January, although the exact timing varies each year depending on weather conditions. The most well-known lupin viewing areas near Lake Tekapo are along the shoreline near the Church of the Good Shepherd and parts of the lakefront walking trails. There is also a famer who opens his land to visitors just as you leave Tekapo towards Christchurch. It’s on the left hand side and is like a sea of purple and pink. You can’t miss it.

A scenic flight is one of the most memorable ways to experience the landscapes around Lake Tekapo. Several local operators offer flights that showcase the turquoise lakes, braided rivers, and snow-capped peaks of the Southern Alps.

Depending on the route, flights may include aerial views of Lake Tekapo, Lake Pukaki, Aoraki / Mount Cook, and the Tasman Glacier.

These flights typically depart from the small airfield near Lake Tekapo and range from short scenic loops to longer glacier landing experiences.

Explore Lake Tekapo Regional Park

Lake Tekapo Regional Park sits just outside the main village and offers several easy walking and cycling trails through open alpine landscapes.

The park features wide gravel paths that follow parts of the lake shoreline and surrounding farmland. These trails provide expansive views of the Mackenzie Basin and are usually much quieter than the central lakefront area.

Take a Day Trip to Lake Pukaki

Lake Pukaki is located about 30 minutes south of Lake Tekapo and is another highlight of the Mackenzie Basin. Like Tekapo, the lake is fed by glacial meltwater, giving it a striking turquoise color.

What makes Lake Pukaki especially impressive is its direct view of Aoraki / Mount Cook, New Zealand’s highest mountain. On clear days, the mountain appears dramatically at the far end of the lake.

The drive between Lake Tekapo and Lake Pukaki is scenic and easy, making it a popular short excursion. Many travelers combine a visit to both lakes while continuing toward Mount Cook National Park.

One of the most photographed viewpoints is located along State Highway 80, where the road leads directly toward Mount Cook.

Intercity buses also connect Lake Tekapo with major cities such as Christchurch and Queenstown, although schedules are limited compared to driving. The closest international airport is Christchurch Airport.

Lake Tekapo and Lake Pukaki are two of the most famous turquoise lakes in New Zealand and are located only about 30 minutes apart. Many travelers visit both during the same trip.
