Aptly nicknamed the Blue Pearl of Morocco, Chefchaouen is a must see place that you should add to your travel bucket list. Situated in the Northwestern region of Morocco, this blue washed city dates all the way back to the 1400s. There are many theories as to why the walls may be blue in color. Some say it was painted blue by Jewish settlers who fled from Spain during the Spanish Reconquista while some others say that it is to drive the mosquitoes away. Another famous theory is that the blue is said to symbolize the sky and heaven and serves as a reminder to lead a spiritual life. Whatever the theory might be, there is no doubt that Chefchaouen is one of the most beautiful cities in Morocco. Here are 30 pictures to inspire you to visit Chefchaouen.
Quick Tips for Exploring Chefchaouen
Chefchaouen is a relatively small city, and therefore can be visited in a day or two. There’s something magical about Chefchaouen during the day as well as at night. Start your day early if possible before the crowds get in. But, definitely leave time to explore the city at night as well. Some of the places I have photographed below are known places and I will list out their names whenever possible. However, most of these pictures are just scenes I captured as I was walking around town. You have to wander through the streets to really capture the essence of Chefchaouen. Google maps is a wonderful thing, unless you are in a Medina in Morocco. The Medina in Chefchaouen is no exception. Let your feet guide you and you are sure to find some famous and hidden spots during your visit to Chefchaouen.
