Location and Accessibility

Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound are both located in Fiordland National Park on New Zealand’s South Island, but they are reached in different ways.

Milford Sound is accessible by road via the Milford Road (State Highway 94), which runs from Te Anau through Fiordland National Park. This makes it possible to drive directly to the fjord and join a cruise from the harbor.

Doubtful Sound cannot be reached by road. Visiting the fjord requires a series of transfers beginning in Manapouri, where visitors cross Lake Manapouri by boat before traveling by bus over Wilmot Pass to reach the fjord.

Because of this difference, Milford Sound is generally easier to access, while Doubtful Sound requires more time to reach. This being said all these logistics for Doubtful Sound will be handled by your tour operator.

Scenery and Landscape

Both Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound are known for their dramatic landscapes shaped by glacial activity.

Milford Sound is famous for its steep cliffs, towering peaks, and numerous waterfalls. One of its most recognizable landmarks is Mitre Peak, which rises sharply from the water near the entrance to the fjord.

Doubtful Sound is significantly larger and more complex, with several arms branching deep into the surrounding mountains. The fjord feels broader and more expansive, with long stretches of water surrounded by forest-covered slopes.

While both locations offer impressive scenery, Milford Sound is often known for its iconic viewpoints and waterfalls, while Doubtful Sound is notable for its scale and sense of remoteness.

Crowds and Atmosphere

Visitor numbers differ significantly between the two fjords.

Milford Sound is one of the most visited natural attractions in New Zealand. Because it can be reached directly by road, many tour buses and independent travelers visit the area each day.

Doubtful Sound receives far fewer visitors due to the longer journey required to reach it. Cruise groups are generally smaller, there are a few less operators and the fjord tends to feel quieter overall.

Wildlife

Both fjords are home to a variety of marine wildlife.

Bottlenose dolphins are commonly seen in Doubtful Sound, where a resident population lives year-round. In Milford Sound, dolphins are also frequently spotted during cruises.

New Zealand fur seals can often be observed resting on rocky outcrops in both locations. Visitors may also see the Fiordland crested penguin, although sightings are less common.

Wildlife sightings vary from day to day, but both Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound offer opportunities to see animals in their natural habitat.

Cruise Experience

The primary activity in both fjords is a scenic cruise through the waterway.

Milford Sound cruises typically last around two hours and travel past major landmarks such as Mitre Peak, Stirling Falls, and the entrance to the Tasman Sea.

Doubtful Sound cruises are usually longer, often lasting three to four hours, and explore deeper sections of the fjord as well as several branching arms.

Because of its size, the cruise through Doubtful Sound tends to cover a larger area, while Milford Sound cruises focus on a smaller but highly dramatic section of the fjord.

Worth to note that you can book an overnight cruise for both fjords in addition to these short sails I mention above.

Time Required to Visit

Milford Sound is generally easier to fit into a travel itinerary. From Te Anau, the drive to Milford Sound takes around two hours, making it possible to visit on a day trip.

Visiting Doubtful Sound usually requires most of a day due to the transfers involved. The journey begins in Manapouri and includes multiple stages before reaching the fjord itself. It is still a day trip but a longer day.

Travelers with limited time often choose Milford Sound, while those with more flexibility may prefer Doubtful Sound.

Final Verdict for Milford Sound vs Doubtful Sound: Which Fiord Should You Choose?

Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound each offer a different way to experience Fiordland National Park.

Milford Sound is easier to reach and features some of the region’s most recognizable landscapes. Doubtful Sound requires more effort to visit but tends to feel quieter and more remote.

If you have the time and budget, I say do both! The experiences are distinct enough and complement each other.

BUT if you must choose

Choose Milford Sound If…

• you want the most accessible fjord in Fiordland
• you prefer a shorter cruise experience
• you are visiting on a tight itinerary
• you want to see famous landmarks such as Mitre Peak

Choose Doubtful Sound If…

• you prefer a quieter and less crowded experience
• you want to explore a larger and more remote fjord
• you have more time in your itinerary
• you are interested in a longer cruise through multiple arms of the fjord

If this still doesn’t help and you are looking for my honest recommendation, I would say choose Milford Sound. First it’s one of the most famous places in all of New Zealand and second, the drive to Milford Sound from Te Anau is very scenic and you will have lots of opportunities to stop and take pictures and/or hike!

Where to Stay

I recommend staying overnight in Te Anau regardless of which fjord you choose. You technically can do both cruises from Queenstown but it just makes for an even longer day. I don’t recommend this unless you absolutely must.

  • Fiordland Lodge – A luxury lodge overlooking Lake Te Anau with spacious rooms and dramatic views of Fiordland’s mountains.
  • Radfords on the Lake – Upscale lakeside suites within walking distance of restaurants and the lakefront.
  • Distinction Te Anau Hotel & Villas – A large lakefront hotel with a pool, spa, and easy access to town.
  • Kepler Oaks Chalet – A quiet chalet-style stay surrounded by farmland just outside town, ideal if you want a more secluded experience.
  • Fiordland Lakeview Motel and Apartments – Comfortable lakefront apartments that are a good mid-range option for families or longer stays.
  • Lakeside Motel & Apartments – A convenient lakefront option with spacious apartments and kitchen facilities, ideal for longer stays (where I stayed)

If you are visiting Milford Sound, you could also stay at Milford Sound Lodge. This is the only accommodation in Milford Sound and they offer luxury chalets, lodge rooms, and campervan sites just minutes from the fjord.

What to Pack

  • Waterproof rain jacket (not just water-resistant)
  • Warm mid-layer (fleece or lightweight down jacket). A jacket with a hood is a plus as the wind is strong out on the water.
  • Comfortable walking shoes or trail runners
  • Refillable water bottle
  • Snacks or packed lunch
  • Sunscreen (UV is strong even on cool days)
  • Sunglasses
  • Offline maps downloaded to your phone
  • Bug spray – the sandflies can be relentless
