by shortgirlontour

Buenos Aires is the birthplace of tango and there is nothing more quintessentially Buenos Aires than watching some tango. There is a lot to do in Buenos Aires but watching a tango show should definitely be a part of your itinerary. This post covers some of the best places that you can watch tango in Buenos Aires.

Introduction

I must admit that it was hard for me to pick one show to go to. There are lots of tango shows in Buenos Aires and they all have their own flair and style. I did a lot of research into finding the best tango shows in Buenos Aires and found the 4+1 places below had the best reviews. In my research, I was really looking for authenticity and recommendations and reviews from locals. Some shows can be touristy and I wanted to make sure I avoided those at all cost.

The one I finally decided to go to was El Querandi but I did not want my research to go to waste.

A Typical Show

  • The shows are during the night and most start pretty late around 10 pm
  • Most shows have various add-ons with the most common one being dinner
  • Most also offer transport to and from the venue
  • Contact the show directly via WhatsApp to get the best rate (they may even offer a discount)

Where to Watch Tango in Buenos Aires

1. El Querandi

El Querandi was a local favorite! I found lots of locals raving about this show. The setting is really small and intimate. The stage is high which makes it easy to see the show from any seat in the room. I opted for their dinner with transportation option and was really impressed by their communicate and service. The show takes you through the progression of tango through the different eras and I was blown away by the dancing and singing. The vocals were particularly outstanding!

2. La Ventana

This highly rated tango show focuses on folklore music. Although the venue is a little on the larger side, people rave about its beauty. The show also captures music and dance from all over the country which adds to its uniqueness. In fact, they boast of 32 artists who perform in the show!

La Ventana offers a dinner show, although the dinner does not get any raving reviews unlike the show itself.

Cafe de los Angelitos might be one of the popular spots to watch tango in Buenos Aires! What makes it extra special is the historic venue! This café was established in 1890 and is one of the most iconic coffee houses in the city. The stage is ornately decorated and the performances always get top marks. The elevated stage gives you a good view of all the performers from anywhere in the room.

4. Rojo Tango

Rojo Tango boasts of an exclusive and intimate tango experience. Located at the luxurious hotel El Faena, it is ideal for a romantic night out. It is definitely the most expensive show on this list and perhaps one of the most expensive shows in the city, but the reviews all seem to say one thing – is is fully worth it! One standout are the dancers themselves. They seem to be the best of the best and they even dance among the audience, making you feel like you are very much a part of the show!

5. San Telmo

If you don’t want to pay for a tango show, you maybe able to catch a free show at San Telmo Square in Buenos Aires. Ok, it is not completely free as tips are always appreciated but I thought what I saw was very authentic! You may be able to catch a performance or two in the afternoons in the square.
