One Day in Queenstown: The Perfect Queenstown Itinerary

by shortgirlontour

Queenstown is often referred to as the adventure capital of the world, thanks to its wide range of adrenaline activities and its role in pioneering commercial bungee jumping. It’s a town that has something for everyone, whether you are a foodie, an adrenaline junkie or a slow traveler. While one day in Queenstown is definitely short given how much there is to see and do, it’s also quite possible that you may only have a limited amount of time as part of a South Island itinerary. The good news is that with a well-planned day you can still experience many of the town’s highlights. This post will cover exactly how you can spend one day in Queenstown.

Why Visit Queenstown

Queenstown sits on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, surrounded by mountains including the dramatic Remarkables range, making it one of the most scenic towns in New Zealand. As I mentioned above, it is often referred to as the adventure capital of the world, with activities ranging from jet boat rides and bungee jumping to hiking, skiing and scenic flights.

But Queenstown is not only about adrenaline. The town also has a relaxed lakeside atmosphere with excellent restaurants, wineries nearby in the Gibbston Valley, and beautiful walking paths along the waterfront. Its compact size means many attractions are easy to reach, making it a perfect stop on a South Island road trip.

How Many Days Do You Need in Queenstown

This really depends on you and what you want to do. If you love to do adventurous things then you may benefit from spending about 2-3 days in Queenstown. If you are a regular reader of my blog, this may come as quite strange given some of the things I’ve done in the past, but I am not an adrenaline junkie, so for me one day in Queenstown was enough time to see the highlights. I focused my New Zealand road trip spending more time in nature vs. some of the towns, so one day was all I could squeeze in Queenstown.

Best Things to Do with One Day in Queenstown

If you only have one day in Queenstown, the key is to focus on the highlights that mixes a bit of scenery, adventure and food.

Ride the Skyline Queenstown Gondola

The Skyline Gondola is one of the most popular attractions in Queenstown and offers some of the best views in the region. The gondola climbs steeply from town to the top of Bob’s Peak, where viewing platforms overlook Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown and the surrounding mountain ranges.

At the top you can simply enjoy the panoramic views, walk along the viewing areas, or add activities like the luge rides. Even if you are short on time, the gondola is worth it for the views alone. see HERE for more.

Take a Shotover Jet Boat Ride

A jet boat ride is one of Queenstown’s most iconic adrenaline experiences. These powerful boats race through narrow river canyons at high speed, often coming incredibly close to the canyon walls while performing thrilling 360-degree spins.

one day in Queenstown

The Shotover Jet ride takes place in the dramatic Shotover River canyon just outside town and lasts about 25 minutes. It is fast, loud and exhilarating, making it one of the most memorable adventure activities in Queenstown. Below is the exact tour that I booked.

Go Wine Tasting in Gibbston Valley

Just a short drive from Queenstown, Gibbston Valley is one of the most famous wine regions in Central Otago. The area is particularly well known for its Pinot Noir, and several wineries offer tastings with beautiful vineyard views.

Even if you only have time for a single stop, visiting a winery in Gibbston Valley is a great way to experience another side of the region beyond the adventure activities. It’s also a nice way to enjoy lunch over views of verdant vineyards.

Walk Along the Lake Wakatipu Waterfront

One of the simplest but most enjoyable things to do in Queenstown is a stroll along the lakefront. The waterfront path runs through the center of town and offers beautiful views across Lake Wakatipu toward the Remarkables mountain range.

Along the way you will pass cafés, restaurants and small beaches where you can sit and enjoy the scenery. It is a perfect way to take a break between activities. If you are visiting in the summer when the days are longer or plan your one day in Queenstown itinerary well, you may even be able to add a relaxing cruise.

Relax at Onsen Hot Pools

After a busy day of exploring, the Onsen Hot Pools offer one of the most relaxing experiences near Queenstown. These private cedar-lined hot pools overlook the Shotover River and surrounding mountains.

Each pool is reserved for a set time slot, and many visitors prefer booking a sunset session for the best views. It is a peaceful way to end a day filled with adventure.

Visit the Queenstown Ice Bar

For something a little different, the Queenstown Ice Bar offers a short but fun experience in a room made entirely of ice. Ice sculptures, frozen glasses and chilled cocktails make this a unique stop while exploring the town center.

Warm jackets are provided at the entrance, and the visit typically lasts about 30 minutes.

Try a Burger at Fergburger

Fergburger is arguably the most famous restaurant in Queenstown and is known for its huge gourmet burgers. Lines often stretch down the street, but they usually move quickly.

The menu features a wide range of burger options, and many people (including myself) consider it a must-try food stop while in Queenstown.

How to Spend One Day in Queenstown

Here is exactly how you can spend one day in Queenstown combining all the best activities.

Morning

Start your day with a shotover jet ride. This was a lot of fun and a good bit of adventure for those who are not full out adrenaline junkies. You may get wet so bring a rain jacket and pants if you want to stay dry.

Lunch

After the jet boat ride, head out to Gibbston Valley for lunch and a wine tasting. I did a wine tasting and had lunch at Mt. Rosa winery. There are lots of wineries to choose from in this area and I recommend making a reservation if you are visiting during peak summer.

The wineries are about 30 minutes outside of Queenstown but I think it’s worth your time if you love wine! If you don’t then you can easily skip this and have lunch in town.

Afternoon

Back in town, take a relaxed walk along the shores of Lake Wakatipu. The waterfront path offers beautiful views of the lake and surrounding mountains and is perfect for slowing the pace after the morning activities. While you are there, stop at Patagonia Chocolates for dessert or a hot chocolate by the lake.

one day in Queenstown

If you skipped the winery lunch or are visiting in the summer when the days are longer, you maybe able to do a cruise on the lake. These cruises take about 1.5 hours. See above for well rated tours.

Early Evening

Next, ride the Skyline Queenstown Gondola up to Bob’s Peak for panoramic views over Queenstown and Lake Wakatipu. The Skyline also has luge rides. Each ride takes about 20 minutes and you can book a minimum of 3 rides online. Note though that if you do the luge rides that you may have to adjust and skip something on this itinerary (i.e., the Ice Bar or the Onsen etc).

one day in Queenstown

Near the Skyline is the Queenstown Ice Bar where you can visit for a quick cocktail or two. Entrance is timed and it takes about 30 minutes. Everything at the bar is made out of ice, from the glasses to the bar to even the seats. It’s a fun concept if you haven’t been to one before. However, if you are visiting with kids, then skip this and do the luge rides which is definitely more kid friendly.

Next to the Ice Bar is Anita Gelato which is a must-try when in Queenstown.

Sunset

For sunset, head to the Onsen Hot Pools. It’s a wonderful way to end your one day in Queenstown. If you are visiting in the summer, sunset is not until quite late. You can check exactly when the sun will set HERE. If you couldn’t get sunset reservations, then you may need to adjust this itinerary accordingly to accommodate your reservation.

Dinner

End the day with dinner at Fergburger, Queenstown’s most famous burger spot. The line is well worth it! It was one of the best burgers I’ve ever had. You can skip the line by ordering via phone at +64 3 441 1232 (menu linked). The bakery next door serves delicious pies that you can stock up on for breakfast the next day!
