Notes About this Itinerary

  • As with most of my itineraries, you can definitely do these in any order and on any day. There is only one place that I think you should visit in the morning and I will call it out below.
  • This itinerary is geared more towards geothermal activity, Māori culture and thermal baths. Feel free to tweak it if you are looking for more adventurous things! (See end of post for options!)
  • I highly recommend renting a car for Rotorua as places on this 2 days in Rotorua itinerary are a bit spread out.

Are 2 Days in Rotorua Enough?

I think 2 days in Rotorua is plenty of time to explore the area. This is especially true if you are stopping in Rotorua as a part of a big road trip around the country as you may want to keep time to explore other places as well.

Getting to Rotorua

You can fly to Rotorua (ROT), primarily via Air New Zealand with domestic flights from Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch. Flights however are limited. Most people will drive to Rotorua from Auckland which takes about 3.5 hours.

2 Days in Rotorua

Day 1

Day 1 of this 2 days in Rotorua itinerary has lots of geothermal activity and Māori cultural experiences. The places of day 1 are a little spread out but lets knock them out so that we can enjoy the sites closer together on day 2.

Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland

Start your day at Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland which is one of Rotorua’s most popular geothermal parks and is located about 25 minutes south of the city. The park features a network of well-maintained walking trails that pass through active geothermal areas, including hot springs, steaming craters, bubbling mud pools, and mineral-rich lakes known for their strong natural colors.

There are 3 routes here and I did all 3 and took about 1.5 hours including stops for many, many pictures. My recommendation is to get here as soon as they open at 8:30 AM and to buy your ticket online which further expedites your entrance. When I left at around 10 AM there were hoards of people coming in massive tour buses and I was SO glad I came here as soon as they opened.

Don’t miss the champagne pool or the devil’s bath which were the two highlights for me. There is also a geyser called Lady Knox that you can visit with the same entry ticket. They artificially erupt it at 10:15 AM daily. Having seen natural geysers in Iceland and knowing I was going to visit on day 2 of this 2 days in Rotorua itinerary, (see below under Te Puia), I had zero interest in this one. But if you do want to see it, you have to go to a separate but nearby area and will need to get there early to park etc.

Secret Spot Hot Tubs

Secret Spot Hot Tubs is a private hot tub experience located near the Whakarewarewa Forest. The facility offers individual cedar hot tubs set among native bush, with each tub fed by fresh spring water that guests adjust to their preferred temperature. Sessions are timed, typically 45 minutes, making it a convenient and low-key option for relaxing between sightseeing stops or after a day of walking and geothermal visits. You can also enjoy a nice adult beverage while you are enjoying your session. The tubs are quite private as your surrounded by foliage. Book HERE.

They have a cafe if you want to grab lunch!

You can also do this in the evening if you prefer. You will need to back track a bit but honestly it will only take you a few minutes.

Hell’s Gate

Hell’s Gate Geothermal Park (Tikitere) is an active geothermal area known for its boiling mud pools, steaming fumaroles, and sulfur-rich landscape. It is also New Zealand’s only geothermal mud bathing experience which makes this a unique experience for your 2 days in Rotorua. You can do the geothermal walk, the mud and sulfur spas or both with a combination ticket. Entry is timed. You don’t need to buy a ticket in advance for the geothermal walk but it is recommended to buy the mud bath ticket in advance as it’s quite popular especially during weekends and peak season. So in other words, if you are going to do both experiences, then you should probably buy your ticket in advance. See HERE to book.

The geothermal walk takes about 45 minutes (bring a head cover as it can get very hot and sunny). The mud baths take about 20 minutes (maximum time they recommend to be in there) and then you can take all the time you want in the sulfur pools. If you are doing both experiences, do the walk first and then the baths. It’s also not a bad idea to take an old swimsuit or you can rent one from them.

Redwood Tree Walk

From Hell’s Gate, make your walk to the Redwoods Treewalk. It’s about a 20 minute drive. Redwoods Treewalk is a short elevated walk through the Whakarewarewa Forest in Rotorua, featuring a series of suspended bridges set high among towering Californian redwood trees. The walk is suitable for all ages and fitness levels and typically takes around 30–40 minutes to complete. It offers an easy way to experience Rotorua’s forest environment without a long hike.

If you rather do this walk at night (which is quite popular) then you can do so later as they are open until quite late, especially in the summer.

Māori Cultural Experience

Mitai Māori Cultural Experience offers an evening program focused on traditional Māori culture, including song, haka, storytelling, and a hāngi meal cooked using geothermal steam. The experience starts in the bush and then goes indoors for the song and dance part. It ends with a buffet dinner. The full evening typically lasts around 3 hours and is a popular option if you are looking to include a cultural dinner show as part if your time in Rotorua. Book HERE.

Day 2

Day 2 has a little of of everything! Māori culture, adventure and of course thermal pools!

Te Puia

Te Puia is a cultural and geothermal attraction and is home to the Te Whakarewarewa Geothermal Valley. It features active geysers, including the famous Pōhutu Geyser, along with mud pools, hot springs, and a Māori Arts and Crafts Institute. They offer about 7 different experiences which you can learn about HERE. I did the Te Rā Guided Experience which is a 90-minute guided tour through the geothermal valley, Kiwi Conservation Centre where you can see kiwis and the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute.

Skyline Rotorua

A visit to Skyline Rotorua starts with a ride on the Gondola, a scenic cable car that takes you up Mt Ngongotahā and offers panoramic views over Lake Rotorua and the surrounding area. At the top, there are several activities to choose from, ranging from adventure rides to more relaxed experiences.

  • Skyline Luge – Gravity-powered rides on multiple tracks, with options for different speeds and skill levels
  • Hyfly Zipline – A dual 400-metre zipline with views over the lake and hills
  • Skyswing – A high swing ride that drops riders from around 50 metres above the ground
  • Mountain Bike Park – Gondola-assisted downhill trails for a range of riding abilities (seasonal)
  • Volcanic Hills Winery – Wine tasting and cellar door experiences located at the top of the Gondola

I went for the winery experience and really enjoyed it! See HERE for more! If you are doing some of the more adventurous activities (especially luging) then you should expect to leave about 2 hours here.

Wai Ariki Hot Springs & Spa

Wai Ariki Hot Springs & Spa is a beautiful thermal pool experience overlooking Lake Rotorua. It has a timed-entry system, with all bathing experiences booked for a specific start time and fixed duration. Experiences are designed as guided wellness journeys that move guests through geothermal pools, hot and cold elements, steam rooms, and relaxation spaces. Timed sessions help control visitor numbers and maintain a quieter atmosphere, so arriving on time is important to fully enjoy the experience.

Wai Ariki timed experiences include:

  • Restorative Journey (Wai Whakaora) – A full geothermal bathing circuit lasting around 2 hours
  • 1-Hour Restorative Bathing – A shorter bathing experience focused on geothermal pools and hot/cold therapy
  • Private Geothermal Pools – Exclusive soaking pools booked in set time slots
  • Combined Packages – Timed bathing experiences paired with spa treatments or extended relaxation areas

Go about 15minutes earlier than your timed slot as they take you on a short guided tour of the facilities first.

Government Gardens

Close to Wai Ariki are the Government Gardens. These gardens are a nice, easy stop when you want a break from Rotorua’s bigger attractions. It’s a relaxed space to wander, stretch your legs, or sit for a bit before heading to the lakefront. I found it worked well as a filler stop rather than something you need to plan around. Don’t forget to check out the beautiful rose garden!

Rotorua Water Front

The Rotorua waterfront is an easy area to wander, especially between activities or in the early evening. The flat walking paths along the lake make it a relaxed place for a stroll, with views across Lake Rotorua and plenty of spots to stop and sit for a while. It’s not something you need to schedule, but it naturally fits into a Rotorua visit if you’re staying nearby or heading to Eat Streat or the spas.

2 DAYS IN ROTORUA

Eat Street

Eat Street can be best described as Rotorua’s outdoor (but covered) food hall where you have several restaurants under one roof to choose from. This is an ideal place to get food, drinks and even dessert!

Polynesian Spa

Polynesian Spa is one of the best places in Rotorua to just relax after 2 days in Rotorua, with several bathing options depending on what you’re after. You can choose the Family Pools if you’re visiting with kids, the Deluxe Lake Spa offers a quieter experience with views over Lake Rotorua, while the Pavilion Pools are adult only and include a mix of geothermal pools. Book Private Pools if you want a more secluded experience. There are also spa treatments and massages available if you want to turn it into more of a wellness stop.

My tip is to book both the Deluxe Spa and the Pavilion Pools. I really enjoyed both experiences so much so that I didn’t want to leave. Also go during sunset as the colors are incredible! This was probably my favorite thing I did during my 2 days in Rotorua.

If you only want to or only can do 1 bathing experience, I would say the Polynesian Spa is the best bang for your buck and the biggest too. They give you free towels, locker and even a fresh juice of your choice!

Other Things To Do in Rotorua

This 2 days in Rotorua itinerary outlines all the things that I did but there are more things to do if you have more time or want to swap out some of the things listed.

  • ZORB Rotorua – Step inside a giant inflatable ball and bounce and roll downhill. See HERE
  • Ziplining – You can fly across ziplines and reach speeds of up to 80 kmph. See Canopy Tours
  • Whakarewarewa  – Guided tours where you will learn about the history and culture of the Tūhourangi Ngāti Wāhiao people
  • Waimangu Volcanic Valley – Known for its walking tracks through volcanic landscapes, steaming vents, and lakes formed by the 1886 Mount Tarawera eruption

Where I Stayed

I stayed at Ripple Rotorua and can highly recommend the place. All accommodation comes with a kitchen so that you can make your own meals and be self contained if you need. It’s conveniently located in a quiet neighborhood on the other side of the road from Skyline Rotorua. They also have a pool as well! I really enjoyed my stay at Ripple. See HERE!
