Where to Find the Most Colorful Streets in Copenhagen

Nordic countries are known for their colorful houses and streets! I’ve heard so many reasons for this, ranging from the colors depict the type of building (i.e., hospital, hotel etc.) to it just helps to brighten even those long dreary winter months. If you are visiting Copenhagen and wondering where to find these colorful streets and houses, then this post has you covered!

Nyhavn

I can’t talk about colorful streets and places in Copenhagen without mentioning Nyhavn! This area is a 17th-century waterfront that has lots of colorful houses, restaurants and bars. It’s very peaceful early morning but gets crowded as the day progresses.

Christianshavn

Translating to Christian’s harbor, this is another area, like Nyhavn that is dotted with restaurants and colorful houses at every turn. Two particular places that come to mind when thinking about colorful streets and places in Copenhagen are Overgaden and Sofiegade. If you have Google Maps, simply put these 2 names in and Google will bring you right there.

Olufsvej

Olufsvej was one of my favorite colorful streets in Copenhagen. Unlike the places above, this street is a little more residential. Some of the houses here date back to the 1870s. The entire street is painted in pastel and bright colors and is decorated with vines and flowers. Olufsvej is a little further from a touristy places but is a quick metro ride away.

Gråbrødretorv

This little square has a bit of a color theme with its red, orange and yellow buildings. There are lots of restaurants around too if you want to sit outside and take it all in!

Kultorvet

Kultorvet translates to the Coal Market and is a public square in the Old Town of Copenhagen. It’s always busy but is also very colorful!

Magstræde & Snaregade

These are two of the oldest streets in Copenhagen, dating back to the 16th century. You can actually see how old some of the houses are where some of the wood work is visible.

Area Around Copenhagen University

The roads around Copenhagen University are so colorful and cute with lots of places to eat and hang out. Here are some of the places to put into Google Maps.

This very small street is lined with brightly colorful houses and tall hollyhocks and rose bushes.
