One Day in Taupo, New Zealand

by shortgirlontour

Taupō is one of those places that quietly surprises you. Sitting on the edge of New Zealand’s largest lake and surrounded by geothermal landscapes and waterfalls, spending one day in Taupo can feel both full and unhurried. If you’re road‑tripping through the North Island or stopping by between Rotorua and Tongariro, here’s how to make the most of one day in Taupo.

One Day in Taupo: Worth the Stop?

Absolutely. Taupō manages to pack waterfalls, adventure, geothermal landscapes, and lake life into a single, easygoing day. Even if you’re short on time, it offers a great balance of activity and calm.

How to Get to Taupō

Taupō is easy to reach and fits naturally into most North Island road trips. Whether you’re driving or flying, getting here is straightforward.

By Car (Best Option)

Driving is by far the easiest and most flexible way to get to Taupō.

  • From Rotorua: Around 1 hour via SH5. A very scenic drive and one of the most common routes.
  • From Auckland: About 3.5–4 hours via SH1 and SH5. Perfect for breaking up the journey with stops along the way.
  • From Wellington: Roughly 4.5–5 hours via SH1, passing through Tongariro National Park.

Having a car makes it much easier to visit places like Orakei Kōrako, Aratiatia Rapids, and Waikite Valley, which are outside the town center.

See my post on Rotorua HERE!

By Bus

Intercity buses run daily services to Taupō from Auckland, Rotorua, and Wellington. The journey is comfortable but slower than driving, and once you arrive you may need tours or taxis to reach attractions outside town.

By Plane

Taupō has a small regional airport with flights from Auckland and Wellington. Flying saves time, but you’ll still want to rent a car once you arrive if you plan to explore beyond the lakefront.

How to Spend One Day in Taupo

There are 2 activities on this One day in Taupo itinerary that you need to organize your day around as they are both timed. I will call these out below.

Orakei Kōrako Geothermal Park

Orakei Kōrako Geothermal Park is said to be one of the most impressive geothermal areas in the North Island. Boardwalks lead you past steaming vents, colorful mineral terraces, bubbling mud pools, and geothermal hot springs, all set within native bush. To get to the park, you actually have to catch a boat across a lake which is included in the ticket. The whole process was very simple and I really enjoyed the park.

I suggest starting your day here as the geothermal activity is said to be most prominent in the morning hours. They open at 8 AM so aim to get here by at least 9 AM the latest (earlier the better but I am not trying to rush you on vacation!). This makes an ideal first stop especially if you are coming from Rotorua as it’s between Taupo and Rotorua. It took me about 1 hour to walk the entire park but keep 1.5 hours just in case you need more time.

Learn more HERE. You can buy tickets when you arrive.

Where you go from here will depend on what time you get done. My suggestion so that you don’t feel rushed is to go to…

Huka Falls

Huka Falls is possibly Taupō’s most famous natural attraction and one that genuinely lives up to the hype. Here, the mighty Waikato River is forced through a narrow rock channel just 15 meters wide, sending an astonishing volume of turquoise water crashing through every second. The color alone is striking, milky blue‑green and almost unreal.

There are several short, well‑maintained walkways and viewing platforms around the falls, each offering a slightly different perspective. Take your time wandering between them; some spots put you right above the rushing water, while others give you a wider view of the river as it surges downstream. There are 2 spots that are a must – Huka Falls Bridge and Huka Falls Lookout on Google Maps.

Aratiatia Rapids

This is one of those timed activities I mentioned above. If you can time your visit with the dam release, it’s well worth it. What starts as a quiet riverbed transforms into a thundering rush of water in just minutes, giving you a front‑row seat to one of Taupō’s most dramatic (and underrated) sights.

If you are following this itinerary as I have laid out, you probably will be able to get here for the 12 noon release.

Aratiatia Rapids Dam Release Schedule

  • 10:00 AM — daily
  • 12:00 PM (noon) — daily
  • 2:00 PM — daily
  • 4:00 PM (extra in summer)October – March only

Each release lasts about 15 minutes and transforms the Waikato River’s narrow gorge into roaring rapids.

Tips for visiting:

  • Arrive 10–15 minutes early so you can park and choose a good viewing spot at the bridge or lookout points.
  • The summer season (Oct–Mar) adds that 4 PM slot, which gives you more flexibility if you’re exploring later in the day

Lava Glass

Now it’s time to head back into town but before you go, pop over to the Lava Glass shop while is located between the rapids and Huka Falls (you can stop on the way to the rapids if you have time too). They have a beautiful and small glass sculpture gardens which is well worth the gander. They also offer glass blowing demonstrations and have a small café as well.

Lunch

Drive back into town to get lunch and stop at the Rangatira Park Lookout on the way for a nice view of Tongariro and Mount Doom. If you are looking for a quick bite, Victoria’s Cafe Kitchen Bar is a great spot!

Cruise Lake Taupō

Cruising Lake Taupo to see the Visit the Māori Rock Carvings is one of the best things you can do with your one day in Taupo. This is the second timed activity I was talking about. Chris Jolly Outdoors is the most popular service provider for this activity and you can book directly with them HERE. They do have a 10% fee if you cancel anytime and a no refund policy if you cancel after 48 hours.

If you want more peace of mind, you can book via GetYourGuide where you can cancel up to 24 hours without penalty. The catch with GetYourGuide is that you may not see all the time slots available via the direct site (the 3 PM is currently not sold). If this is the case, you may need to adjust this one day in Taupo itinerary accordingly but most places other than the geothermal park are close by so it shouldn’t be a major concern. The cruise is 1.5 hours.

You can also kayak to the rock carvings if you prefer that or take a slower cruise. You have lots of options to choose from here!

Hot Water Beach

After the cruise swing by the hot water beach to dip your toes in and feel the naturally warm water. Consider it a warm up for the next activity!

Wairakei Terraces

This is one of the best ways to end your One Day in Taupo. Wairakei Terraces is a beautifully designed geothermal bathing experience just north of Taupō, known for its steaming silica terraces and milky blue mineral pools. Warm water cascades down the terraces into a series of soaking pools, creating a setting that feels both natural and curated. There is also a terrace walk option but I skipped this and went straight for the pools! See HERE. The pools close at 9 PM other than on Thursdays when it closes at 7 PM (however, there is probably a last entry time so give yourself at least 1 hour before closing to visit)

Other Things to Do in Taupō

If you have more than one day in Taupo or want to swap out one of the things I’ve listed above for something more adrenaline pumping, here are more interesting things you can do in Taupo.

  • Sky Diving – Tandem skydiving began in New Zealand in Taupō. You have the option of skydiving from various altitudes
  • Bungy Jumping – Jump from a clifftop at 47 meters overlooking the Waikato River. You can also touch the water if you want
  • Jet Boat Ride – You can take a jet boat to the base of Huka Falls. It takes about 30 minutes.

Where to Stay in Taupō

The following hotels get really good reviews.

If you are doing the Tongariro Alpine Crossing the next day, then I suggest staying closer to the shuttle pickup location so that you don’t have to wake up too early in the morning. Turangi is a perfect location if you want to do this. I stayed at the Creel Lodge and really liked it! The self contained cottages felt homely.
